Polygon Milling Cutters for Optimal Multi-Edge Cutting
Efficient Key Surfaces on Lathes
Polygon turning with high-quality Dieterle polygon cutters is the ideal solution for the quick and precise production of key flats on lathes. Using our multi-edge cutting technique, both standard key surfaces such as 2-, 4-, 6-, or 8-edged profiles, as well as special shapes like 5-edged or rhombic forms, can be realized.
Our Dieterle PFV system for multi-edge cutting consists of specially developed polygon cutters with adjustable inserts and durable indexable cutting plates. The basic holder, also known as a cutting knife, is available for all common machine types. The inserted indexable plates are precisely ground for their specific application. With the appropriate coating, we ensure long tool life and optimal cutting performance.
Thanks to the adjustable inserts of our polygon cutter, various polygons can be produced as key surfaces depending on the configuration and gear ratio. Compared to conventional milling, multi-edge cutting with our system offers significant time savings while maintaining high flexibility.
In summary: Multi-edge cutting with our polygon cutters is a fast, precise, and flexible alternative to traditional milling, making it ideal for efficient production of key surfaces on lathes.
Dieterle Systems PFV and SM
Our polygon cutters are available with adjustable cartridges (System PFV) or without adjustable cartridges (System SM). Polygonal cutters with adjustable cassettes offer the advantage that individual key surfaces can be adjusted. This makes it possible to implement even very tight tolerances within the polygon without any problems.

Advantages of Polygon Turning
- Faster than milling
- 2, 4, 6, 8 flats
- Special shapes (e.g. 5 flats or rhomboids)
- Adjustable cassettes for tight tolerances
- Production of different polygons with the same tool

Important information about polygon milling:
- Alignment of control shaft between workpiece and tool is essential
- The number of surfaces produced on the workpiece depends on the transmission ratio between the workpiece and the tool as well as the number of cutting edges
- Small degrees of crowning on the flats cannot be avoided, in this regard we can advise you in detail to find the optimal solution
- Applicable in grooving and sliding head turning operations
- Infeed preferably in axial direction for ideal running smoothness
- Higher infeed is possible in axial direction than in radial direction
